I have always been driven to depict the human form through oil painting, however, it was only after having my children (in 2019 and 2023) that I started exploring the themes of childhood and motherhood. These latest works, started in 2024, use my son and daughter as subjects and sometimes feature a maternal presence, either a self-portrait, allegory or symbol representing an aspect of motherhood. The pelican, a historic symbol of self-sacrifice, is one which I return to regularly as it is a condition that I relate to as a mother. I have also been exploring the perspectives of my son, through his imagined and perceived worlds. By constructing landscapes from his stories I aim to depict these make-believe worlds and his place in them, as well as evoking a sense of nostalgia for the viewer’s own lost childhood.
Over the years I have been highly influenced by painters who excel at virtuoso brush marks such as Sorolla, Sargent and Fechin. Recently I have also been inspired by contemporary artists; Kent Williams for his narrative paintings and Jose Luis Cena for his depictions of childhood.
